FLOWER TOUR CENTRAL & WEST CRETEDay 1
. Arrival at Heraklion airport, by 18.00
at the latest.
We drive by minibus to our first hotel in Arolithos
, 11 km southwest of Heraklion. Arolithos is a hotel with the character of a traditional village with a lively village square.
. The walk today leads us to the “home mountain” of Heraklion, the mythical Mount Youchtas (795 m)
. Situated between the Dikti
mountains and Mount Ida
, this symbol of the sleeping Zeus offers a panoramic view.
It is a true paradise of flowers, with over 380 species with many orchids amongst them! And it's a great place to see the griffin vulture and other birds of prey.
is a village in the most famous wine-making region of Crete, and has a beautiful old centre.
. A walk in the area of Anogia
, a traditional village at the foot of Mount Psiloritis
. We visit Zominthos, an important excavation from the Minoan time. From the Nida plateau
we walk up to Zeus' cave, if the amount of snow allows us!
Lots of flowers to be expected today in higher altitudes and early blooms still to be seen in all their glory.
. Today a somewhat longer transfer to our next hotel in Omalos
, a plateau at an altitude of over 1000 m, known as the starting point of the Samaria gorge
. On the way we pause at the coast to see typical coastal vegetation.
, a Dorian- Roman excavation, not only has a lot of flowers to show, but also offers a great view on the snow-capped White Mountains in the west and on Souda Bay in the north: really stunning views!
. First a walk on the Omalos plateau, surrounded by high peaks, amongst them the well-known Mount Gingilos
With luck we will see fields full of flowering tulips, a species endemic to this area.
Then we continue uphill to the Kallergi refuge. Surrounded by splendid views of the snowy mountains, we will look for the specific mountain flora. We can expect, amongst others, carpets of small white crocuses. Plenty of time for identification and taking pictures!
. A beautiful walk leads us from the Omalos plateau to the beginning of the Irini gorge
. We walk through the gorge as far as the water level will allow us.
In the afternoon a drive through the villages of Epanochori and Rhodovani, where we go looking for white cyclamen and paeonies.
There are also a lot of sweet chestnut trees in this area.
. Today we transfer to Spili
, our last place to stay.
We drive via Lakki, Meskla and Therisso. On the way we walk through a short gorge, close to Meskla
, and we visit a gorge at Therisso
Close to Rethymno we visit the Minoan Cemetery of Armeni
, not only for its archeological interest, but also because of the rich flora, including many orchids.
. The walk starts on Gious Kampos
, a high plateau between Spili and Gerakari, world famous for its tulips and many (endemic) orchids.
In the background we see the snow-capped summits of Mount Psiloritis
and Mount Khedros
. First we go uphill, cross-country, then following tracks and old footpaths we descend to Gerakari, situated in the Amari valley
. Will there still be cherry blossom to be seen?
. Starting at Mournes, 3 km from Spili, we'll find orchids on a hill close to the village.
Crossing the pass of the Xiron
mountains we will walk downhill, partly along an ancient Roman road. This part of the walk has an abundance of flowers! Today we will also visit two Byzantine churches
, both with well-preserved frescoes. In the afternoon we will visit some “orchid sites” near Vatos and Kerames
. After breakfast it is time to say goodbye and leave for the airport in Heraklion.
Due to the distance to the airport, your return flight should not be before 11.00
in the morning!
